How to Improve My Writing Skill

Good afternoon all ^^

Today I want to share about “How to Improve My Writing Skill”. Actually I’m not a person who can share about this. But I love writing so much, so I think, why I'm not trying this?

You know, my lecturer often say this quote in the class: “There is no way to improve your writing skill, except writing itself.” (Mr. Afrianto Daud)

And let guess, I fall in love with this quote. Because I think it's true. 

You know, I have read a book that was written by Felix. Y. Siauw, in his book that titled “Habits” he said that the one way to improve your skill is do these two things: practice and repeatation.

To start something you need practice first. Then after you practice, you need repeat again and again until these action became your habits. You know if something become your habits, you will do that things everyday. Otomatically. Without realizing it.

So, how we practice this skill.

In my first lesson in writing class, there are some way to practice your writing.

First, you need to find your topic. In choosing a topic, you need to consider two condition. The topic is not too narrow and is not too broad (general) too.

You know to find some ideas, you can implement Brainstorming. Brainstorming is a way of gathering ideas about a topic. When you brainstorm, write every idea that comes to you. Don’t worry about the ides are good or silly, useful or not. You can decide that later. In brainstorm, you just need to gathering as many ideas as you can.

There are some types of brainstorming such as: making a list, free writing, and maping. These three types can help you find the good topic/idea to write.

In these three types I prefer to do free writing. Why? Because I just write whatever I want. Without care about grammar and spelling. Just write. You know, this way sometimes can make your idea flow profusely. Because you don’t need to check the grammar rules or something like that. All you do is write and let your idea flow down.

In the end, after you finish write all idea in your mind, you can stop and read your writing from the begining until the end. If you find some mistakes, you can check rules of grammar and edit your own. Or you can ask your friend or lecturer to check if your writing is good or not. Don’t forget to ask some advices too.

If you willing to this activity and practice a lot, I’m pretty sure that your writing skill will improve someday.
